In 2013 the Barbican London paired artists and scientists in a series of performance lectures exploring the topic of consciousness. I was presented with an open brief titled, Altered States, to accompany a live performance by the musician James Holden. I developed a sequence of animation loops based on Entoptic phenomena, visuals that originate from within the eye itself. These can be triggered by hallucinogenic drugs or sensory deprivation, but also benign sources such as deposits on the surface of the eye. The animation loops were synchronized via MIDI with Holdens synthesiser and triggered live at the event to an audience of over 1500 people.
